What Is PTFE (Teflon)?
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a high-performance fluoropolymer commonly associated with the Teflon™ brand. It is valued in engineering applications for its broad chemical resistance, low coefficient of friction, non-stick surface and strong electrical insulation properties. The exact performance of a part depends on its PTFE grade, design, operating conditions and any applicable material specifications.
For CNC-machined components, PTFE can be useful where low friction, chemical compatibility or electrical insulation matters more than the stiffness and load capacity typically provided by metals. It is not a universal substitute: its softness, thermal expansion and tendency to deform under sustained load should be considered during design.
Key Properties and Design Considerations
PTFE offers excellent resistance to many chemicals, a low-friction surface and good electrical insulation. It also performs across a wide temperature range, although allowable limits vary by grade and application. Compared with metals, PTFE is relatively soft and has lower stiffness; under sustained compression it may creep, and temperature changes can affect dimensions. These characteristics should be considered when defining fits, wall thicknesses, clamping methods and tolerances.
Example One: PTFE Seals and Gaskets
PTFE can be machined into sealing rings, gaskets, washers and custom sealing elements for pumps, valves, chemical-processing equipment and laboratory instruments. Its chemical resistance and low friction can be helpful in demanding environments. The drawing should identify the sealing faces, critical dimensions, mating parts and the media and temperature the component will encounter.

Example Two: PTFE Insulating Components
PTFE is used for insulating spacers, sleeves, bushings and supports in electrical, electronic and laboratory equipment. Its insulating properties can help separate conductive parts while supporting accurate assembly. For components with tight positional requirements, specify the datum scheme, critical hole locations and the inspection method during quotation review.

Example Three: PTFE Fluid-Handling Components
Custom PTFE parts may be used in fluid-handling systems, including valve seats, connectors, nozzles and selected pump components. Their suitability depends on the fluid, pressure, temperature, mechanical loading and the geometry of the mating components. These operating conditions should be provided before material and machining requirements are finalized.

What to Consider When CNC Machining PTFE
PTFE can be machined by CNC turning and milling, but its softness and tendency to deform make tooling, fixturing and process planning important. Sharp tools, suitable cutting parameters and controlled clamping can help limit burrs, surface damage and dimensional variation. For thin walls, close tolerances or features that must retain their shape under load, a trial part and first-article inspection can help verify the process.
What to Send for an Engineering Review
Please provide the current 2D drawing and 3D model, PTFE grade or filled-material specification, quantity, critical dimensions and tolerances, surface-finish requirements, mating-part details, and the intended chemical, temperature and mechanical conditions. Flag any sealing faces or dimensions that require first-article verification. Clear inputs help identify process questions before production and support a more accurate quotation.
